IELTS Public Transportation

Public Transportation Part 2

Describe your favourite form of public transportation.

You should say:

What type of transportation it is
      How often you use it
      Why it is your favourite

Whether it is popular in your country.

Well. If I had to choose to choose one form of public transportation, I would choose the subway. I use it every week day to commute to my workplace and it’s modern and convenient.

I suppose I have to say that it’s not exactly perfect, but compared to the bus its great. Here in the city the buses are reasonably frequent, but there is a lot of traffic congestion which really makes your journey time pretty unpredictable. I guess I just don’t feel as comfortable taking a bus and a lot of them are quite old. This really kind of contrasts with the subway because it’s a relatively new system and they have even recently added some new lines.

It’s true that during rush hour there is a lot of overcrowding, whatever mode of transport you try to take, but I think this is just city life. Even if it’s busy, the subway is reliable and smooth.

I guess I have been using the subway for many years and haven’t really encountered many major problems. I think that it’s more environmentally friendly too because buses really add to the air pollution and the roads are busy enough anyway with all the domestic vehicles.

I think that most of the major cities in my country have modern subway systems that are well-planned out. I think everybody uses it and the safety record is also very good. I think that also the technology will improve and the trains will get faster and use less power, whereas we’ll always get stuck in traffic on the roads no matter what the quality of our vehicle is.

Public Transportation Part 3

Part 3 Discussion Questions

How has the transport system in your hometown changed over the last fifty years?

I think most people would say that it has completely transformed really. I guess the establishment of such a vast subway network is always going to change things dramatically. Actually it is still changing now as new lines are under construction.

.
What could the government do to improve the transport system in the future?

Well. I think that the current investment in the subway network is essentially a good thing. In my opinion, we can invest more in having trains that are electric and therefore don’t burn up any fuel.

How do you think that climate change affects the way we think about public transportation?

I think it really makes it difficult to ignore pollution problems caused by the number of cars on the road. If we make public transportation more efficient and environmentally friendly the less people will drive.

What are the differences between using a car and using public transportation?

Using a car is usually a quicker and more comfortable means of getting from A to B. I mean you can play you plan the route you need to go to and head there directly whereas with public transportation forms like buses and trains you have a lot of stops.

Please note: Some of the sample videos for part 3 of the speaking test are longer than in the real test. Our aim was to show a large variety of discussion questions and sample answers that students might encounter in the exam.
